About Doug Leonard
I have worked in the Health and Fitness Industry for over 20 years. After qualifying from a Fitness and Leisure management course, I went on to work for one of the leading fitness clubs in Ireland. In Westwood Health Club I worked my way up from Fitness Instructor to a Personal Training and Strength Coach to Senior Management in the gym department. It was here that I got the desire to follow my passion and put myself through 3 years of study at the Institute of Physical Therapy.
Qualifications:
Graduated from the Institute of Physical Therapists and Applied Science in 2003.
Within this 3 year course I developed over a yearly basis,
Year 1 = Massage and Remedial Therapy
Year 2 = Sports Massage
Year 3 = Physical Therapy
I am a member of the Irish Association of Physical Therapists.
I am an ART Provider (Active Release Techniques)
ART has played a vital role in my continued education, it has given me a deeper knowledge and understanding of how the human body reactes under the stresses of work and/or a specific sport. It has given me the confidence to take the treatment from the inital injury to full resolution by means of ART treatment and specific strenghtening and stretching exercises.
There are a number of ART training modules which have branched out from 3 compulsory Levels.
Upper extremity, lower extremity and Spine.
I have achieved to date:
- The Upper Extremity in 2005
- The Spine in 2006
- Lower Extremity course in June 08
- Masters Level in 2009
- Upper Extremity Re-cert in May 2011
- Continuing education course each year to maintain A.R.T status and to be updated on changes made within the course and the Industry.
- A.R.T Complex course in June 2014
- Long Tract Nerve Entrapment course in Aug 2014
- OMT Spinal Manipulation Therapy 2015
- OMT Advanced Spinal Manipulation Therapy 2016
- OMT Osteopathic Spinal Manipulation 2018
- A.R.T Level 2 Lower Extremity 2019
- Rehab-U Level 1, 2020
In recent years I've studied Osteopthic techniques and spinal manipulation and have found that this modality combined with the advanced soft tissue techniques brings my unique style of treatment to a different level for the client.
I am a Level 2 National Strength Coach qualified by PICP (Charles Poliquin) I have also taken his Bio-signature and PIMST modules.
Charles' courses help me better understand the human body under loads by means of weight training. As most of my clients are from that backround I am qualified to prescribe strength training and rehabilition programs. Through this understanding I will have a better knowledge of what the clients need by way of treatment and exercise.
I have also completed a course in Sports Rehabilitation of an Injured Athlete in 2005. This was done with the Head Physio of Shelbourne football Club. It entailed taking an athlete from the initial injury on field and going through each step involved in getting them to full fitness and back playing their specific sport.
I have qualifications in ITEC, NCVA, NCEHS, and Paul Chek to name a few.
